Where to Find this Episode:
Okay, let's talk about dating in your 50s. Because it is not the same game it was in your 20s — and honestly, thank god, because we know so much more about ourselves now.
The apps are... a lot.
Dating apps are basically window shopping for love. You're swiping based on four photos and one clever bio line, trying to decide if this is your person. It's a little absurd when you say it out loud. But if you're going to play that game, you at least need to walk in knowing exactly what you want — and exactly what you're done tolerating.
We learned this one the hard way.
Here's the truth: a lot of us didn't have non-negotiables in our 20s and 30s. We didn't even know we were allowed to have them. So we ended up in relationships where we weren't heard, weren't supported, weren't really seen. Not because we didn't deserve better — we just hadn't figured out yet that we could ask for it.
Non-negotiables sound like a big, serious term, but really they're just... the basics. Feeling heard. Feeling valued. Having someone show up emotionally. That's not "too picky." That's the floor.
Do the work before you download the app.
Before you even think about dating again, it's worth sitting with yourself first. What did you learn from what didn't work? What do you actually need now — not at 25, not at 35, but now? Therapy, journaling, just honest conversations with yourself — whatever gets you there. The clearer you are on you, the clearer your non-negotiables get.
Real life still works, too.
Apps are convenient, sure. But there's something about meeting someone through a hobby, a class, a friend, or just striking up a conversation in line somewhere — it hits different. Organic connection has a way of showing you who someone really is before you've even decided if you're interested.
Your life doesn't need a plus-one to be full.
This is the mindset shift: build a life you love regardless of whether there's a partner in it. When you're not dating from a place of lack, you stop settling. A partner should add to your life — not become the thing holding it together.
Non-negotiables aren't preferences. They're values.
There's a difference between "I'd prefer he likes hiking" and "I need someone who takes care of his health" or "I need someone who meets me emotionally." Non-negotiables are the stuff that protects your peace. Know the difference, and say it out loud — to yourself and to whoever you're dating.
Bottom line: protect your peace.
Dating in your 50s is quality over quantity, full stop. Wanting your standards met isn't being difficult — it's making sure your life stays as good as you've worked to make it. Set the non-negotiables. Say them with your chest. And know that waiting for someone who actually meets them? That's not settling for less — that's the whole point.
Here's to us, ladies. Your peace is worth protecting, and your person is worth the wait.
